Waterford FC Extends Unbeaten Streak in Premier Division Draw
Waterford FC extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier Division with a 0-0 draw against Galway United at Pearse Stadium. Graham Coughlan's side showed resilience in challenging conditions, with the game unfolding as a blustery encounter on a dried-out Pearse Stadium surface.
The first clear-cut opportunities of the game fell the way of United inside the opening 10 minutes, as an Aaron Bolger effort was cleared off the line by Hayden Cann before Jimmy Keohane's strike drifted just past the post. At the other end, a deflected John Mahon volley rattled the crossbar, while Jordan Houston saw a long-range attempt zip over it.
The Blues defender also went close with a close-range volley following a sublime flick from Padraig Amond. As both teams battled for every breaking ball in this crucial six-pointer towards the lower half of the table, both backlines had to be sharp to deal with the windy Salthill conditions.
In an entertaining first period with chances being created at either end, United's Ed McCarthy looked lively at left wing-back, while Frantz Pierrot flashed a shot just over. Just before the break, Waterford's Will Johnson forced Hugo Da Cunha into a low save before sending a rasping strike just wide of the target.
A saturated start to the second half saw a slower tempo to proceedings, as the difficult playing conditions played a part in the flow of the remaining 45 minutes. The only half-chances of note in the opening 30 minutes of the second period came the way of Keohane and Mahon, but both efforts went straight into the hands of the opposition keeper.
It was always going to take a moment of magic to break a deadlock in an even match-up, and United substitute Francely Lomboto very nearly produced one with a swivelling volley that arrowed narrowly wide of the post. In the end, there was no winning goal, as both teams - who will be keeping a keen eye on the result between Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United later this evening - will have to be content with a point.
