Stephen Molumphy, a current Lieutenant Colonel in the Defence Forces, is expected to become the new Waterford senior hurling manager. This position was among many contenders reported by the Irish Examiner earlier this month. After interviews involving a five-person selection committee which included discussions about his performance as captain of Ballyduff Upper during their successful Munster SHC season in 2010, Molumphy is now seen very close to securing the role.
Previously, he served as Kerry's manager for three years, with them winning both a Division 1 title and being chosen as All-Star, which happened while Molumphy also captained his club in just their third senior county championship. The latest World Games held in Waterford recently showcased Molumphy playing for Brussels after returning from a posting in Ukraine.
Molumphy's candidacy is seen with more interest due to the current state of Waterford’s senior hurling championships, currently halfway into its group phase stages, where he led his club and team multiple times successfully. In 2010, as part of the success in Munster SHC, Molumphy also became an All-Star winner for the club’s only third-time senior county championship victory that year.
