Open Trial Announcement
Waterford manager Stephen Molumphy has confirmed that the county will hold an open trial later this year. The match will take place at either Walsh Park or Fraher Field in November, with club secretaries asked to nominate players they believe deserve a chance to join the senior squad.
Molumphy explained in an open letter to supporters that the trial is part of a wider plan to introduce a significant number of new players to the Waterford panel for 2027. He stressed that the door must remain open for talent across the county’s clubs.
Building the 2027 Panel
The manager outlined that the coming months will see a shift in the panel composition. “We will be looking to bring in a significant number of new players and give opportunities to those who can contribute to Waterford Senior Hurling in 2027 and beyond,” Molumphy said. Some of these players will be younger and may only be involved in the early stages of the programme, while others could return to the U20 setup in December.
Molumphy highlighted the importance of commitment, sacrifice and hard work for anyone invited to the senior panel. He added that the process will be open and competitive, and that the Waterford jersey must be earned. The manager also noted that many of the county’s All-Ireland minor champions of 2025 will be stepping up in the coming years.
Community Involvement
In his letter, Molumphy called on clubs, supporters, families and anyone who loves Waterford hurling to back the team. He said, “When we walk out for our first League game in 2027, and ultimately when the Championship comes around, we want Walsh Park and every ground we play in to feel like home.”
The manager emphasised that the support of the community is crucial: “The support of our clubs, our supporters, our families and everyone who loves Waterford hurling matters enormously.” He concluded by inviting players who receive an invitation to embrace the opportunity, challenge themselves and earn their place, while urging supporters to join him in the journey.
The open trial will therefore be a key moment for clubs to showcase talent and for Waterford to build a competitive senior team that reflects the pride and ambition of the county.
